Aboriginal Interpreter Services

Make a booking

It is advised, where possible, that bookings be made well in advance to ensure all interpreting requirements are met and to allow for travel and accommodation arrangements to be made if required.

You will need to be able to meet with the interpreter before the assignment begins to provide a pre-interview briefing on the topic of interpreting. Find out more about the The Interpreting Process.

When booking an interpreter you must provide the following information:

  • name of the organisation/section requesting the service
  • name, skin name, age and gender of the Aboriginal person/persons requiring the service
  • Aboriginal language required. Please note the AIS is able to assist with determining the correct language
  • community of origin
  • location, date and time the service is needed
  • topic of assignment.

We request information about a client (gender, skin name, family name, community, age) prior to an assignment so that we can select an appropriate interpreter. If an interpreter has a certain type of relationship with a potential client, it may be inappropriate for him or her to take on the job of interpreting for that person. For example, an Aboriginal female will usually prefer a female interpreter and some relations cannot look at or talk to each other.
Details of the job are also important, especially if they involve technical, legal or health matters.

You can make a booking by:
